Graft Chilling Device

Chilling tissue reduces the metabolic demand of cells. Reduced metabolic demand reduces the need for energy (ATP) produced by anaerobic metabolism. Most physicians chill petri dishes on containers full of ice or on a frozen block of ice inside a tray or plastic container. Unfortunately, ice melts progressively over the course of a day. Often times the ice is covered by some material such as plastic wrap or aluminum foil. This often prevents the staff from seeing the status of the ice. Many times the ice melts suddenly and it is not noticed by the staff in time to add more ice or change the frozen container. This can result in a sudden warming of tissue form 4 degrees Celsius to over 20 degrees Celsius. Such a temperature change can be very traumatic for tissue and lead to the formation of large quantities of free radicals.

The chiller plate over comes this risk by maintain a constant temperature during the day. It also allows the physician to dial in a specific temperature such as 4 degrees Celsius or 8 degrees Celsius. There is not risk of ice melting.
