Chilling tissue reduces the metabolic demand of cells and the need for energy produced by anaerobic metabolism. Most physicians chill petri dishes on ice inside a tray or plastic container. Unfortunately, ice melts progressively over the course of a day. The chiller plate overcomes the risk of temperature change by maintaining a constant temperature during the day. It also allows the physician to dial in a specific temperature such as 4 or 8 degrees Celsius.
